AT THE EDGE OF A MOUNTAIN LAKE

Through the tops of lodgepole pines,

the sun splays its remaining rays on our faces.

We traipse along the shore and

muse over past loves, future dreams—

your nearing passage

into adulthood.

I pick up twin rocks,

matching shapes stacked

fitting precisely

together.

Handing one to you,

we count to three,

our synchronous throws

not skipping at all—

splashing the same distance away

identical ripples widening,

as do our eyes

and smiles.

Circles on the surface converge,

confirming to this mother

and daughter that

our orbits were always intended

to cross.
