Holy Spirit, Help

by Nathaniel Evans

Holy Spirit, Help

I am cleansed, yet I am lost.

I know not what to do.

I desire righteousness, this is true,

but I do what I do not want to do.

I know what’s right, for how could I not,

when the One who is right is always here?

Christ was among and beside us on earth,

But Holy Spirit is inside me, cleansing the dirt.

The Great Helper, the Wonderful Counselor,

the Spirit of Truth, the Speaker of Authority,

the Imparter of Wisdom, the Teacher of Knowledge,

the Guide to the Way, the Bearer of God’s Words.

How could I fail with Him indwelling?

Yet I do not do what I want to do.

I strive in zealous fervor,

scream in anger at my flesh.

But my efforts are not enough because

when I desire good, evil tempts me the greatest.

I need help.

Holy Spirit dwelling in me, help.

When I desire anger, fill me with peace;

when I want to make people suffer, show me true justice.

When temptations arise, take over me.

I am weak.

Holy Spirit dwelling in me, help.

When laziness strikes my bones, move them for me.

When jealousy turns me green, break my mind from comparison’s greed.

Control my thoughts and guide my heart.

I am weak.

When the lustful thoughts cross my mind, wipe them away.

Do not let me dwell on things impure.

When I refuse to cast off my flesh each morn’,

do it for me. Treat it with scorn.

I am weak.

There are things that are evil indeed,

even still inside me. I am weak and incomplete,

and even through Christ’s sacrifice, I dwell on these things.

But You, O Spirit are just what I need.

For in You is truth and nobility and righteousness

and purity and love and excellence and praiseworthiness.

You dwell on the very thoughts of goodness as One who is God.

I admire You, Spirit, but I am weak.

So do in me what I cannot do.

Live for me; be strong in me.

I am a liar, so speak truth through me.

I am a peasant eating dirt, so raise me up with You.

I am unrighteous flesh, so become my righteous Spirit.

I am impure flesh, so purify my soul.

I am hatred and rage, so love God’s work for me.

I am one of no ability, so make Your excellent fruit come from me.

I am worthy of scorn, so let others praise You in me.

I am a dweller on my own thoughts, so inject Yours into my mind.

Holy Spirit dwelling in me, help.
