Up Where the Wind Breathes

UP WHERE THE WIND BREATHES

If the wind is your breath,

then I understand now

what they mean when they

call it life.

Animating the grass.

Bringing the ships in from the sea.

Holding up the gull’s wings.

Let it rise.

Let it whisper to me:

You, too, are safe to take flight,

held up by a strength too powerful

to see—

the breath of life

that carries you as it

animates you,

holding you fast in motion.

Beckoning you to stillness

in the movement

that sets you free.
